Have you ever wanted to lay down some serious rubber without fear of forfeiting your license? Have you ever wanted to learn advanced driving techniques from professionals? Racing is alive and very much a community sport here in Canada and for the past 48 years the Mustang family has been a part of this tradition.
If you’ve got the need for speed, here are 5 places you can safely let loose your inner speed demon.
In Quebec: Circuit ICar Motorsport Complex (Mirabel QC). Located 20 minutes outside of Montreal, Circuit ICar provides an ultramodern complex for drag, circuit and kart racing. They also offer a number of fun day programs designed to help you tweak your driving skills.
We recommend: The Jacques Villeneuve Academy Ultimate Race Simulation. This full-day racing program is designed for drivers of all levels. Get behind the wheel of a Mustang GT for training and hot laps with a qualified instructor. Walk away with sweet windswept hair – and a diploma you can show off!
Central Canada: Toronto Motorsports Park (Cayuga, ON). About one hour southwest of Toronto, Toronto Motorsports Park has been offering Southern Ontarians a chance to hit the drag strip with their own cars in a safe and fun environment since 1955! There’s even a daylong drag racing school. The Derkzen Racing Experience let’s you jump behind the wheel of a 430HP Mustang and let it fly!
We recommend: The Test & Tune program. For just $10, anyone can bring out their car and give drag racing a try. With techs and racers on hand, you’ll learn a lot about the sport while getting an opportunity to see how you and your machine measure up!
Heading West: Edmonton International Speedway (Wetaskiwin, AB). Just south of Edmonton, the Edmonton International Speedway offers a variety of test-drives and schools for every skill level to get out on the track and experience the exhilaration of stock car racing! If you’re looking for a real NASCAR feel, this is the place!
We recommend: The EIR Race School. Spend a day learning to drive in a real NASCAR machine! The school caters to every age group and skill level. Drive however you feel comfortable, but expect to floor it as the day progresses!
editor’s note: we had originally listed the Edmonton International Raceway as being located in Sherwood Park, when in fact it is in Wetaskiwin. Thanks to our readers for pointing out our oversight.
Pacific: Mission Raceway Park (Mission, BC). An hour east of Vancouver is Mission Raceway Park where you can get in on some open drag race action. Many events are open to anyone with the urge to try their luck on this world-class drag strip!
We recommend: High School Drag Racing. This program is open to teens registered in high school in British Columbia with a valid “N” class license. The competition allows teens to learn about racing in a safe place, then jump behind the wheel of a Mustang and showdown with other teens. Street racing kills – this is an alternative everyone can enjoy!
Atlantic: Atlantic Sports Car Club (Lower Sackville, NS). The ASCC is offering its first High Performance Driving School this May! Learn to drive like a pro with your own car. Experienced instructors are on hand to conduct small group training.
We recommend: That you act quickly! The course takes place over the May long weekend (May 20th and 21st, 2012). Find out more by visiting their website!
For five decades, the Mustang has been a cultural icon. It’s been driven by everyone from Steven McQueen to James Bond and embodies a spirit of independence set free.
