The midsize family sedan just got a little more exciting. The 2017 Fusion lineup will feature four smart and sporty new technology-packed models. With a lineup that accentuates performance, alternative energy, craftsmanship and leading-edge technology, it’s time to rediscover the midsize sedan.
Ready to perform
The all-wheel-drive V6 Fusion Sport is designed to turn heads. It cuts a fine figure with deep air intakes, 19-inch wheels, a rear spoiler and dual twin exhausts.
But this aggressive styling only hints at what’s under the hood to make other midsize sedans shudder. Its twin-turbocharged 2.7-liter EcoBoost V6 engine delivers a projected 325 horsepower and 350 pound-feet of torque, putting out more power than the Honda Accord, Toyota Camry and even the BMW 340.
This upgrade in power comes with an upgrade in control. The V6 Fusion Sport adds continuously controlled damping for real-time suspension tuning. It detects potholes faster than the blink of an eye and adjusts the shock absorbers to impact transmitted. Smooth.
We are also offering two electrified 2017 Fusion models—the Fusion Energi and the Fusion Hybrid—with more efficient electric motors and improved software that will extend the cars’ range and improve fuel efficiency. Both of these vehicles will be capable of travelling at speeds up to 135 km/h in EV mode. Fusion Energi will be able to travel for up to 32 kilometres using only electric power from its battery, which can be charged in just two-and-a-half hours using a Ford recommended 240-volt home charging station. With gas and electric power combined, Fusion Energi will have a range of as much as 800 kilometres.
Art you can drive
Finally, the Fusion Platinum is being offered for those who want to own the pinnacle of craftsmanship in family sedans. Upon settling into the driver’s seat, the first thing an owner might notice is the antiqued cocoa leather adorning the instrument and door trim panels. A hand on the steering wheel reveals the suppleness of hand-wrapped premium Venetian leather.
The heart of the Platinum beats with a two-liter EcoBoost engine, which delivers efficient power to tires on the 19-inch polished wheels. It’s a true study in upscale refinement.
Technology looking out
This year’s Fusions are coming with a suite of high-tech components meant to make driver assist technologies that improve the driving experience. They represent the first Ford model sold in North America to come equipped with the pedestrian detection system, which uses cameras and radar to sense people walking in front of the car. The system can warn the driver and apply brakes to minimize or reduce the risk of accidents.
Also available are technologies such as the Lane-keeping system that helps drivers maintain proper lane position, and the Blind Spot Information System that alerts the driver to unseen traffic around the vehicle. Finally, Fusions can perform hands-free parallel and perpendicular parking.
“Fusion offers people a lot more car – including helpful technology, beautiful design and a more rewarding driving experience than other midsize sedans,” said Raj Nair, Ford executive vice president and chief technical officer, Global Product Development.
