Inspiration can come from anywhere. Sometimes it’s an apple tumbling from a tree that provides the “a-ha!” moment. Sometimes, it’s a 9-11 call.

When Ford engineer Steve von Foerster learned one of his neighbours called the police after his Shelby GT350 Mustang put a bit too much rumble into his morning coffee, he wasn’t surprised.

The Mustang GT’s amazing sound might be one of its calling cards, but that doesn’t mean everyone appreciates its powerful growl rattling the spoon right out of their cereal bowl.

And it was with that sense of neighbourly duty that von Foerster set out to find a way to provide the best of both worlds – the signature Mustang GT exhaust note that drivers crave and an undisturbed neighbourhood.

Enter a smart new technology available on properly equipped 2018 Mustang GT vehicles: Quiet Exhaust with Quiet Start.

Don’t want to wake the neighbours when you pull away from your home? Engage Quiet Exhaust with the press of a button on your steering wheel, then slip into traffic without disturbance. Worried about a loud start up when parked in your driveway? Quiet Start is an exclusive new feature that allows for you to schedule your Quiet Exhaust start ups. Fire up your Mustang GT in relative peace, using an adjustable pre-set timer that’s customizable to your lifestyle.

Waking the neighbours is no laughing matter. A recent poll by Ranker.com listed only “early morning law mowing” as a more bothersome sound. The Quiet Exhaust and Quiet Start technology – made possible by the new active valve performance exhaust system found in the 2018 Mustang GT – reduces the decibel level by about 10, down to a “more comfortable” 72 decibels, explains Matt Flis, Ford exhaust development engineer. That’s about as loud as a household dishwasher.

Active valve performance exhaust is one of many changes Mustang fans will see when cars reach showrooms later this year. In addition to its restyled exterior design and refined interior, Mustang will offer an all-digital 12-inch instrument cluster, a 10-speed automatic transmission, MagneRide damping system and SYNC® Connect with FordPass.

With its new Drag Strip mode, Mustang GT now reaches 100 km/h in under four seconds – faster than a $94,000 USD Porsche 911 Carrera – setting a new standard as the quickest Mustang GT ever.
